Meta Shareholders to Follow Tesla’s Path, Propose Plans to Add Bitcoin to Treasury Reserve

Meta's Bold Move? Shareholders Push for Bitcoin Integration Into its Reserves to Safeguard $72 Billion Treasury Amid Rising Institutional Adoption

A Meta shareholder has submitted a proposal urging the social media giant to adopt Bitcoin into its corporate treasury reserve.

The proposal urges the tech giant to convert a portion of its $72 billion in cash reserves to Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and unforeseen volatility.

The initiative aims to mirror steps taken by other tech giant companies like Tesla and MicroStrategy, which have acquired Bitcoin as a buffer against inflation.

Advocating for Bitcoin Adoption at Meta

Ethan Peck, an employee of the National Center for Public Policy Research, submitted the proposal on behalf of his family’s shares. The proposal recommends the company convert a portion of its $72 billion in cash and short-term cash equivalents into Bitcoin.

Peck emphasized Bitcoin’s fixed supply and its performance as an inflation-resistant store of value especially when compared to other liquid assets.

Meta is losing 28% of its cash assets over time due to inflation,” he stated. He also cited Bitcoin’s outperformance of traditional bonds by 1,262% over the past five years as a significant reason for its adoption.

The National Center’s Role in Pushing Bitcoin Adoption

The National Center for Public Policy Research, a Washington-based think tank, has been at the forefront of advocating for Bitcoin adoption among major corporations.

In December 2024, the organization presented a similar proposal to Microsoft at its annual shareholder meeting persuading the company to allocate at least 1% of its $484 billion in assets to Bitcoin. Although Microsoft shareholders eventually voted against the initiative, the proposal drew significant attention.

Additionally, the organization also submitted a proposal to Amazon in December 2024, urging the e-commerce giant to allocate 5% of its assets to Bitcoin. Amazon shareholders are set to debate this proposal during their April 2025 meeting.

Why a Bitcoin Reserve is Important for Meta

The proposal argues that Meta has an opportunity to lead the institutional Bitcoin adoption movement. It highlights Bitcoin’s growing recognition, including the success of BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF, as evidence of its viability as a strategic asset.

Meta has the opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to innovation and financial resilience,” the submission stated, emphasizing Meta’s history of embracing cutting-edge technologies.

Despite Bitcoin’s growing adoption among institutional organizations, Big Tech firms have remained significantly cautious. However, companies like Tesla and MicroStrategy have successfully incorporated Bitcoin into their financial strategies. MicroStrategy’s stock has outperformed the market by 2,191% over the past five years, proving the immense benefits of Bitcoin adoption.
